Deepak Pillai

Deepak heads Christopher & Lee Ong’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications, and Data Privacy & Protection Practice Group. He has been practising exclusively in the areas of Technology & Telecommunications law and Data Protection since 1997 and is acknowledged as a leading Technology & Telecommunications lawyer in Malaysia.

Prior to the Malaysian Personal Data Protection Act coming into force back in 2010, Deepak was one of the first practitioners to provide feedback and input in relation to the drafting of the PDPA Bill in 1999. He has been active in Data Protection since then and apart from conducting full scale PDPA audits and compliance exercises for many listed institutions, he has also played a leading role in formulating the Codes of Practice for Data Protection for the Banking, Insurance and Communication sectors.

Deepak is currently the appointed Chairman of the Personal Data Protection Committee of the Malaysian Bar and was also appointed in 2021 as a member of the Personal Data Protection Appeal Tribunal by the Minister of Communications and Multimedia.

Deepak has been consecutively listed by the established legal directories as a leading individual in the area of IT and Telecommunications since 2001. He is listed by Chambers Asia Pacific as a Band 1 Leading Lawyer for Technology, Media & Telecoms, and is also ranked as a Tier 1 Leading Individual for TMT by Asia Pacific Legal 500.
