Practice Areas

Christopher Marks is the Asia–Pacific Practice Leader for Legal Technology and Data Analytics at Ankura, based in Hong Kong SAR. He is the go-to digital forensics, eDiscovery and investigations specialist for complex, cross-border disputes with a People's Republic of China dimension, matters where the standard playbook does not work and a defensible, bespoke solution has to be built.

Chris is instructed by multinational corporates, financial institutions, regulators and their independent counsel on high-stakes litigation support, international arbitration, regulatory investigations, FCPA and export-control matters, intellectual property disputes, fraud and asset tracing, and cybersecurity incidents. He is regularly engaged as an independent expert witness, including before the Supreme Court of Singapore, and as a court-appointed neutral forensic inspector.

What distinguishes his practice is the combination of three things rarely found together: deep technical credibility across the full Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) and digital forensics lifecycle; a financial-investigator's eye for evidence (his career began in accountancy and audit at Baker Tilly in 1996); and a translator's ability to render highly technical analysis into clear, courtroom-ready narrative for judges, regulators, counsel and boards.

His approach is collaborative and developmental, he treats counsel and in-house teams as design partners, not recipients of a service so the end solution is fit for purpose and to expectations.

Core areas of focus include:

Cross-border eDiscovery and managed document review, including PRC State Secret Review and air-gapped review platforms.

Digital forensic investigations and incident response, including business email compromise, IP theft, and spoliation analysis.

Independent and court-appointed expert witness work, including critique of opposing expert methodologies.

FCPA, DOJ, SEC, SFC, ICAC and HKMA-driven investigations and monitorships.

Cross-border data transfer strategy under PRC, Hong Kong, EU and broader APAC data-privacy regimes.

Forensic accounting–led investigations into fraud, misappropriation and financial misconduct.

Litigation readiness, defensible preservation, and post-incident remediation

Work Highlights

Independent Forensic Expert — High-Profile Asian Criminal Proceeding: Instructed by an Asia-based asset manager, Chris is leading the critique of opposing expert methodologies, identifying material analytical and procedural flaws, and providing clear, court-ready explanations that have reshaped the evidentiary narrative.

Court-Appointed Neutral Forensic Inspector — WeRide Corp. et al. v. Kun Huang et al. (N.D. Cal.): Responsible engagement partner for the neutral forensic inspection appointment. Led the team whose evidential analysis enabled the court to see through a complex arms-length corporate vehicle to the spoliation and IP theft beneath it.

Expert Witness — Supreme Court of Singapore: Gave expert evidence in civil litigation concerning the forensic examination of electronically disclosed documents.

U.S. DOJ Cross-Border Pharmaceutical Investigation: Led the Asia workstream of a DOJ investigation for a global pharmaceutical client, coordinating defensible cross-border data transfers, collections and review protocols across more than ten jurisdictions.

PRC IP Decryption & Evidential Integrity Matter: Designed and insisted upon a decryption methodology that preserved chain-of-evidence integrity despite client pressure to move faster. When the opposing side later attacked the authenticity of the data, the preserved images and documented process defeated the challenge cleanly.

Bespoke Air-Gapped Review Environments — Cross-Border Gaming, Regulatory and State-Secret Matters: Designed and built isolated, air-gapped processing and review platforms enabling defensible review of highly sensitive data across Macao SAR, the U.S., Singapore and Mainland China.

Social Media MDL — U.S. Multidistrict Litigation: Directed global eDiscovery, managed bespoke processing for proprietary chat and collaboration platforms, coordinated air-gapped review including PRC State Secret Review, and delivered defensible productions under significant time pressure.

Global LIBOR Regulatory Investigation: Delivered end-to-end processing and review to support responses to U.S., U.K. and Hong Kong regulatory authorities for an international bank.
