Provided by Christopher Hogan
Chris Hogan focuses his litigation practice on resolving complicated disputes for clients, primarily those in the energy industry. Chris has substantial experience in federal court, state court, and arbitration proceedings. He has tried numerous cases as first chair, including jury trials and arbitration final hearings. His practice niches include mineral rights disputes such as pooling and commingling, ownership, and royalty payment issues.
Chris Hogan is managing partner of Hogan Thompson Schuelke LLP, a Houston-based litigation boutique that focuses on energy litigation. Chris started the firm (formerly Hogan Thompson LLP) with his partner Samantha Thompson in February 2020. In a little more than six years, the firm has grown from two founding partners to a team of attorneys practicing oil and gas law nationwide.
Since starting the firm, Chris has successfully represented major energy companies, arguing before the Texas Supreme Court, Fifth Circuit, Sixth Circuit, Eighth Circuit, and multiple Texas appellate courts. Many of the cases that he has handled deal with cutting-edge legal questions in oil and gas law. The Texas Oil & Gas Association (TXOGA) has also hired Chris as lead counsel on multiple occasions when presenting amicus briefs to the Texas Supreme Court and Courts of Appeals.
For more than a decade, Chris has been intensely focused on learning and understanding energy law, including:
• Chris has become a trusted attorney for TXOGA. He has written briefs for TXOGA on major issues in the Texas oil and gas business: allocation wells (Railroad Commission of Texas v. Opiela), produced-water ownership (Cactus Water Services, LLC v. COG Operating, LLC), and offset wells (Rosetta Resources Operating, LP v. Martin).
• Chris is a member of the Pattern Jury Charges – Oil and Gas Committee for the Texas Bar Association, which gathers some of the best and brightest legal minds in Texas to distill and update Texas caselaw dealing with oil and gas matters.
• He is a regular speaker at events hosted by the Texas State Bar and Institute for Energy Law. Chris also leads CLE presentations to firm clients on various topics such as retained acreage clauses, cotenants without a joint operating agreement, protecting attorney-client privilege in the oil patch, and legal risks related to allocation wells in Texas.
• Chris is an officer for the Oil, Gas & Energy Resources Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, an honor that is bestowed on only six Texas practitioners statewide.
• He is currently the Energy Law Section Chair for the Houston Bar Association and has been an officer since 2022.
• Chris has been recognized on multiple rising star and 40 and Under lists including Law360, Bloomberg Law, Oil and Gas Investor, Texas Lawyer, Benchmark Litigation, Houston Business Journal and Thomson Reuters Super Lawyers.
• His pro bono work currently includes working with Kids in Need of Defense to secure asylum for a young woman from Honduras. Chris has also represented numerous clients in Section 1983 civil rights pro bono cases, including one case in Corpus Christi, Texas, in which a jury awarded his client punitive damages based on injuries he sustained while in prison.
Prior to founding Hogan Thompson Schuelke, Chris was a partner at Reynolds Frizzell and an attorney at Susman Godfrey. He also clerked for the Hon. Jerry E. Smith.
