B. Ted Howes has more than three decades of experience representing clients in international arbitrations, both in the United States and abroad.
Clients rely on Ted’s pragmatic counsel and deep knowledge of international arbitration law and procedures in arbitrating their most complex cross-border commercial disputes. He has acted as lead counsel for clients from around the world in cases under all of the major international commercial arbitration rules, including the ICC, ICDR, HKIAC, SIAC, LCIA and UNCITRAL Rules. Clients also trust Ted as an authority on drafting arbitration provisions for complex international commercial contracts.
Ted has particular experience representing clients in international arbitrations arising out M&A, joint venture, intellectual property licensing, private equity and supplier/distributor disputes. In one of his most noteworthy victories, Ted obtained a final arbitration award in Singapore ordering the PRC partner of a manufacturing joint venture to pay over $40 million in damages, including the reimbursement of all attorneys’ fees and costs, to the US partner, and then prevailed in enforcing the arbitration award before the Supreme People’s Court in Beijing.
Ted is a member of the ICC’s Commission on Arbitration, the Advisory Board to the Institute for Transnational Arbitration and the Board of Editors of the American Arbitration Association’s Dispute Resolution Journal. As a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, he is also frequently appointed to serve as an international arbitrator.
Ted is fluent in English and conversational in French and Spanish.
