Atkins practices primarily in the areas of commercial finance and real estate, with a strong emphasis on affordable housing and community development, representing developers (including non-profit corporations) and lenders throughout the Southeast in numerous transactions involving low-income housing tax credits (federal and state). Atkins also works frequently with other conventional and subsidized financing sources such as HOME funds, AHP funds, CDBG, and tax-exempt bond financing, as well as other financing programs from HUD, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and USDA Rural Development. Additionally, he is outside general counsel to the Alabama Affordable Housing Association (AAHA), which is the affordable housing trade association for the State of Alabama.

Atkins is fluent in Spanish and has also worked closely with members of the firm's Corporate and Securities, Construction and Government Contracts practice groups to assist a number of clients with projects in Latin American markets.
