Practice Areas
Alex’s practice covers environmental law, public law, and planning. His clients include NGOs, protest groups, individuals (including vulnerable children, destitute asylum seekers, migrants, homeless persons, and persons with disabilities), and public bodies such as local authorities and state schools. He has a particular interest in public interest litigation, human rights, pollution, and climate change. He is a judicial review specialist.
Work highlights include acting for the claimants in: the Cumbria coal mine inquiry and subsequent legal challenge; the strategic environmental assessment challenge to new permitted development rights; the challenge to the Bibby Stockholm asylum barge; the challenge to the Napier Barracks asylum accommodation Special Development Order (and several other asylum camps); various challenges to oil and gas planning permissions; various complaints to the Office for Environmental Protection regarding river pollution, agricultural pollution, and pesticide licensing; various challenges to the gentrification of urban communities; various Equality Act challenges brought by blind persons.
Alex does a lot of publicly funded work and accepts direct access, fixed fee and pro bono instructions where appropriate. He is a legal reviewer for the charity Freedom From Torture.
Alex has law degrees from Oxford and LSE and a PhD from Cambridge. He attended comprehensive schools and was the first in his family to go to university.
