Thompsons Scotland was set up in 1979 in Edinburgh, today there are Thompsons offices throughout Scotland, and the firm has expanded to become the largest specialist personal injury practice in Scotland. The Scottish practice is an award-winning firm in its own right, with over 200 staff, including 13 partners and 6 solicitor advocates with expertise covering asbestos related disease, road traffic accidents, workplace accidents, historic childhood abuse and employment law.
PRINCIPAL AREAS OF WORK
Personal Injury: Thompsons Scotland specialises in personal injury compensation claims, helping clients who have suffered injuries in road traffic accidents, accidents at work and industrial diseases. Thompsons was founded on the idea that victims of negligence should receive the fair amount of compensation they deserve, and all Thompsons work is based on this core belief. As one of Scotland’s largest personal injury firms, Thompsons have helped the innocent victims involved in some of the country’s most devastating tragedies over the last few decades, such as the Lockerbie disaster and the Piper Alpha explosion. More recently, the firm has helped the families of victims in the sinking of the Flying Phantom on the River Clyde, the Stockline Plastics factory explosion, and the helicopter crash at the Clutha pub.
Thompsons’ highly experienced personal injury team provide advice in all areas of personal injury law and is led by eight partners: Andrew Henderson (Solicitor Advocate), Glen Millar (Solicitor Advocate), Patrick McGuire (Solicitor Advocate), Wendy Durie, Derek McLean, Jayne Crawford, Seonaid Brophy and Alan Rodgers.
Industrial Disease: The firm has an outstanding reputation in the pursuit of Industrial Disease claims, in particular asbestos-related diseases. Working closely with Scotland’s biggest Industrial Disease Charity, Action on Asbestos, the team, led by Partner and Solicitor Advocate Laura Blane, has secured landmark victories in the Scottish Courts and The Supreme Court and lobbied the Scottish Parliament for groundbreaking legislation in support of claimants.
Partners Bruce Shields, Solicitor Advocate, and Hannah Bennett play pivotal roles and bring a wealth of experience as does specialist Solicitor Advocate Richard Singer.
Employment Law: Thompsons has the largest employment law team in Scotland representing claimants, dealing with the most high profile and complex employment law cases across all specialisms. With a unique focus on industrial relations law, the team appears regularly at the Employment Appeal Tribunal, Court of Session and Central Arbitration Committee, winning landmark cases in the fields of Equal Pay (instructed by two trade unions in the £0.5 Billion claim against Glasgow City Council), collective labour law (Arnott v INEOS on unlawful inducement; Unite the Union v Loganair, CAC) and all aspects of general employment rights.
Led by partner David Martyn, the team has an enviable reputation with claimants, advice agencies and charities and is regularly instructed by every major trade union in Scotland. The team is unique in only ever representing claimants.
Mass Litigation: Thompsons are experts in pursuing compensation on behalf of groups of claimants affected by mass wrongs. Thompsons led group claims in respect of Mesh survivors; the baby ashes, PIP breast implant and Metal on Metal hip replacement scandals. The firm are currently involved in Scotland’s first action raised under the Group Proceedings Rules. Thompsons’ approach to mass litigation is the brain child of Patrick McGuire who is widely regarded for imaginative and problem solving approach to pursuing the most difficult claims.
Historic Child Abuse: Thompsons are the only firm in Scotland to have a dedicated team of trauma informed solicitors who are dedicated to only pursuing claims on behalf of survivors of historic child abuse. The team is led by partner Laura Connor.
Public Inquiries: No firm in Scotland can rival Thompsons experience in representing Core Participants at Public Inquiries. Thompsons have served as Recognised Legal Representative in 3 of the 4 Public Inquiries held in Scotland since the 2005 Inquiries Act. It currently represents more than 250 Scottish Core Participants at the UK Infected Public Inquiry.
