Main Areas of Practice:  

Banking & Finance:
The firm is a leading player in the area of banking and finance, having advised a flagship flour milling project-company, on financing arrangements with a syndicate of banks for a term loan facility of SL Rs.1 billion and US$14.5 million. The firm advised the Singapore office of an international bank on its US$55 million facility to a Sri Lankan State Bank; advised two leading US-based investment banks on US$87.5 million facility to a leading manufacturer; advised a China-based insurer on granting investment insurance for a US$350 million BOT Project.

The firm advised a global conglomerate listed on the Italian and Spanish stock exchanges on acquisition of a local company for £17.5 million. The firm also advises several listed companies on matters relating to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Regulations, the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) Listing Rules and also on matters relating to issue of new shares, debentures etc.

Dispute Resolution & Litigation:
The firm successfully represented a leading steel manufacturer in arbitration enforcement proceedings relating to awards of US$4.5 million and US$11.35 million. The firm advised Mercator Shipping Lines of Singapore on its litigation against two state companies, in connection with coal transportation and lightering contracts. The firm is currently advising an international construction company in arbitration claim for Rs.571 million against one of its subcontractors.

Intellectual Property:
The firm continues to handle a large volume of trademark, industrial design and patent applications for a number of local, as well as foreign clients (including Fortune 500 companies), including Rolls-Royce, Audi AG, BMW AG, Hyundai, Nissan, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Research in Motion, Hilton Worldwide Inc., Marriott Worldwide Inc., Virgin Enterprises Limited, Levi Strauss Singer, ICI Paints Akzonobel, Standard Chartered Bank,VISA International, Prudential Assurance, TNT, Debanhams PLC, Victoria’s Secret, Hermes International, Kraft Foods Inc, Cargil Inc, TVS and Ranbaxy Laboratories.

The firm acted for two of the main contractors, Taisei Corporation of Japan and the China National Technical Import & Export Corporation (CNTIC) (China), of the US$741 million Southern Transport Development Project (STDP) for construction of the southern expressway. Property & Construction:
The firm advises Keangnam Corporation of Korea on their ongoing US$60 million Condominium Development Project, and also other condominium projects. The firm is advising a foreign joint venture company on a US$80 million project for the construction of a Five-star luxury hotel in the heart of Colombo City. Taxation, Customs & Regulatory: The firm recently advised a Dutch Trust on its microfinance activities in Sri Lanka. The firm advised a primary dealer in Government Treasury Instruments and the global footwear manufacturer on its tax matters. The firm also advised the US manufacturing conglomerate S.C. Johnson (USA), in relation to a Customs case.
