About
Following the powerful purpose of ‘Righting Wrongs’– a mission statement with which it has become synonymous – the firm has challenged some of Britain’s biggest institutions – and even the Government itself – highlighting failures which have caused harm and loss of lives.
With a clear ‘client first’ approach, instilled and driven by owner and sole director Neil Hudgell, Hudgells leads from the front on wide-reaching cases affecting large sections of society, and is prepared to commit to significant amounts of pro bono work to ensure the very best chance of delivering justice.
Main Areas of Practice:
Clinical Negligence:
The firm boasts a vastly-experienced Clinical Negligence team with experts covering every discipline in the field, from birth injuries and misdiagnosis to sepsis and surgical errors. It has the ability to handle cases of the most complex in nature and highest-value in terms of settlement, with a strong caseload of birth negligence work, in which clients have suffered life-limiting conditions. These cases involve seeking substantial damages to cover long-term care and home-adaptations.
The firm also has a track record of taking on cases which many others may reject due to their difficult and challenging nature, and in terms of establishing breach and causation.
Personal Injury:
Hudgells' personal injury team boasts vastly-experienced and highly-skilled serious injury specialists who work on cases in which rehabilitation services are crucial, often securing damages settlements running into millions of pounds.
The department has established an industry reputation for combining empathy and diligence with ruthless determination to secure the right outcomes for clients, with a serious injury pledge stretching well beyond legal support to provide immediate practical help such as liaising with police and insurers to long-term support over financial planning and care.
Lawyers are swift to obtain appropriate packages of life-long care and support for claimants, with the team regularly successful in securing significant interim damages payments to ensure the earliest implementation of physiotherapy programmes and the adaptation of living premises.
Civil Liberties and Human Rights:
The team has established a reputation as a true national leader in this field of work, carving out a reputation for challenging the failings of state bodies and institutions, overcoming huge challenges in legal work to ensure cases are brought before the relevant courts and that organisations are held fully to account.
It has been highly praised for its leading role in representing former sub-postmasters who were wrongfully convicted as part of the Post Office Horizon Scandal - now recognised as the biggest miscarriage of justice in UK legal history. Hudgells legal work led to convictions being overturned and they have also represented sub-postmasters at the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry.
The department has also represented families at the Manchester Arena Inquiry, which has examined the events around the 2017 bombing of the arena, resulting in the loss of 22 lives and causing serious-life-changing injuries to many others.
Travel Litigation:
Hudgells’ travel department represents the interests of those who suffer serious injury abroad, with a recognised, industry-leading ability to handle the most complex of claims and secure settlements for clients in cases involving complicated foreign laws and organisations.
Many of the cases handled are highly-complicated and involve instructing foreign legal teams to support cases or investigate circumstances relating to accidents, or securing independent evidence and opinion from foreign experts.
Hudgells has been chosen to represent clients in cases involving catastrophic injury, accidents and injuries leading to loss of mental capacity and in cases which have led to fatalities.
Inquest / Inquiry representation:
The firm has established a strong reputation for its work in supporting families through Inquests, particularly Article 2 Inquests which examine whether the actions of a state organisation or a particular NHS Trust has contributed to the death.
Cases have included supporting the families of the four young men killed by serial killer Stephen Port through inquests, at which a jury concluded in December 2021 that police mistakes probably contributed to the deaths.
In June 2022 this led to the reopening of an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigation into the conduct of officers involved.
Public Inquiry work has included representing Core Participants at the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry and the Manchester Arena Inquiry.
