THE FIRM Founded in 1920, Dehns is one of Europe’s leading firms of patent and trade mark attorneys with 200 staff across five offices: London, Munich, Oxford, Brighton and Manchester.
The firm’s patent work mainly comes from European direct clients, particularly from Scandinavia, as well as the UK. The firm also acts for a large number of US clients and handles a significant amount of work originating in Asia. Clients include small businesses and private inventors as well as multinational firms. Most of the firm’s trade mark work comes from the UK and from US direct clients.
The firm’s straightforward, business-oriented approach combined with its technical excellence has made it a leader in its field.
PRINCIPAL AREAS OF WORK Dehns has expertise in a wide range of intellectual property services, including: preparation, filing and prosecution of applications; opposition and cancellation actions; advice on areas of conflict and freedom to operate; regular watching for patents and trade marks of competitors; and conducting infringement and other proceedings.
Dehns files 4500+ UK, European and international patent applications each year and is active in fields such as: computing, electronics, telecommunications, automotive, engineering, aeronautics, civil engineering, high tech physics, nanotechnology, pharmaceuticals, biochemistry, biotechnology, petrochemicals, polymer chemistry, textiles and materials science and metallurgy. In 2016, Dehns filed the most European patents of any European firm of patent attorneys.
Trade mark sectors include broadcasting and communications, computing, publishing, leisure and entertainment, food and drinks, cosmetics, finance and travel. Dehns’ extensive experience in contentious matters ranges from European oppositions and appeals to worldwide infringement conflicts, providing comprehensive litigation advice to major multinational corporations, either as specialist advisors as part of a wider team, or as a standalone litigation unit. Dehns has one of the most experienced opposition practices in Europe with several partners recognised as genuine leaders and experts in this area, and who use this expertise to influence and improve the firm’s prosecution practice, enabling Dehns to prosecute applications more effectively and efficiently.
RECRUITMENT Dehns provides intensive training and recruits highly qualified graduates and post graduates; no less than 40% of fee earners have PhDs. The firm has an outstanding record of professional examination successes, with the Gill prize for highest marks in the country being awarded to a number of Dehns’ trainees.
