Siwatibau and Sloan has been involved in some of Fiji’s largest infrastructure projects, including hydro projects, public private partnership projects, Fiji’s first wind farm, and providing regular advice to the Electricity Authority of Fiji (formerly Fiji Electricity Authority). The firm’s telecommunications practice has been a cornerstone of its success and two of the firm’s partners were involved in the successful World Bank sponsored mediation that deregulated Fiji’s telecommunications industry in 2007. Siwatibau and Sloan are committed to informed, inclusive and transparent decision making that supports the development of Fiji and the Pacific region and this particularly includes the firm’s involvement in environmental law. Our firm regularly publishes in relation to the Fiji law and governance context with the aim of increasing an understanding of legal rights, good governance of natural resources and inclusive, participatory, transparent decision-making.

We have an active litigation team with our lawyers frequently representing litigants in all Courts and Tribunal’s in Fiji, and we have a specialist employment law team. The firm supports a range of pro-bono and reduced fee work and we frequently undertake pro-bono litigation including pro-bono environmental litigation. We were recently the lawyers who established the polluter pay principle applied under Fiji’s Environment Management Act in a landmark Court of Appeal decision that found the oil company Total negligent for a fuel leak. For the last 3 years, the firm has been teaching law of the sea and oceans governance within the University of the South Pacific, School of Marine Studies in recognition of the importance of oceans and resources to a sustainable future and the well being of Pacific Island Countries, their peoples and economies.
