Professor Tarek F. Riad is the Managing Partner of Kosheri, Rashed & Riad - Legal Consultants & Attorneys at Law, one of the leading practitioners of international arbitration, corporate law and commercial law in Egypt.
Professor Riad has an LLB (1980) from Cairo Law School, in addition to an LLM (1982) and SJD (1985) from Harvard Law School in Arbitration Law. Professor Riad has been a member of the Egyptian Bar since 1980 and a member of New York Bar since 1985 and speaks Arabic, English and French.
Professor Riad was the chairman of the executive committee and member of the board of trustees of the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC) (2013 to 2019), alternate member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration (2012 to 2018), a member of the scientific council of the ICC World Business Law Institute (2005 to 2018) and is currently a member of the Emeritus Council of the ICC Institute. Professor Riad is also a designated member of the ICSID panel of arbitrators and conciliators, member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration, and registered as Arbitrator and Panelist in the Special Roster of the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) of the WTO. Also, Professor Riad is the Vice President of the Management Committee of Mediation and Arbitration Center Established by Union of Arab Banks (UAB) since 2024 until now and a member of the Supreme Council of Arbitration of the UAB Mediation and Arbitration Center.
Dr. Riad is a Professor of commercial and business law and the head of the said department at the German University in Cairo (2004 up to date). Also, he was a legal advisor to the speaker of the Egyptian People Assembly (1992 to 1999). Professor Riad was a member of the Egyptian Council of State (1981 to 1985) and a lecturer of private international law at Cairo university Beni-Suef branch law school (1986 – 1988).
Professor Riad has acted as counsel, co-arbitrator, sole arbitrator and chairman in more than 120 arbitration cases, which include commercial, construction, investment and oil & gas arbitrations proceedings under the rules of the ICC, DIAC, Cairo Regional Center for International Commercial Arbitration, Gulf Corporation Council Commercial Arbitration Center, Abu Dhabi Commercial Conciliation and Arbitration Center (ADCCAC), Swiss Chamber’s Arbitration Institution (Geneva), and UNCITRAL.
Professor Riad has acted as counsel for several multinational corporations such as Caterpillar, Lockheed Martin, Four Seasons, Philips, Colgate Palmolive, Siemens and AT & Caterpillar, Lockheed Martin, Four Seasons, Philips, Colgate Palmolive, Siemens and AT & T.
Professor Riad has been appointed as expert on Egyptian Middle Eastern Laws such as Kuwaiti Law, UAE Law, Omani Law, Bahrani Law and Saudi Law in numerous arbitrations including ICC, DIAC and Ad Hoc and also in front of foreign courts such as the Commercial Court in London (Queen Bench division) as well as a giving expert before the US courts including United States District Court Central District of California- Eastern Division, United States District Court – Southern District of New York, and United States District Court Western District of Washington at Seattle, and UK and Jersey courts including the High Court of Justice, Queens Bench divisions, Commercial Court.
Professor Riad is currently member of the legislative committee formed by the Prime minister to amend the Egyptian arbitration law and was the chairman of two subcommittees responsible for drafting the companies’ laws and the Economic Courts’ law at the Economic Committee of the Egyptian Supreme Policy Council. In May 2011 until June 2012. Professor Riad was appointed as a member of the Consultative Council responsible for preparing drafts laws for the Egyptian Council of Ministries.
Professor Riad has written numerous publications including two books entitled The Applicable Law in Transnational Arbitration and Egyptian Companies Law, in addition to many articles about arbitration and the legal aspects of launching business in Egypt.
