Work Highlights

- Acting for Werit in its Supreme Court patent case against Schutz. The case changed the law in relation to patent infringement for consumable parts.

- Acting for mobile phone maker ZTE in its multi-jurisdictional patent litigation with Ericsson in relation to patents declared essential to various mobile telecoms standards.

- Acting for QUALCOMM Incorporated in its cross border patent action against Nokia Corporation in relation to GPRS and EDGE mobile phone technology.

- Acted for Merck in obtaining the first ever zero term SPC (supplementary protection certificate) for a pharmaceutical product (JANUVIA, for diabetes).

- Acting for Medinol in its multi-jurisdictional patent litigation with Abbott in relation to coronary heart stents.

Experience

Stephen is recognised for his ability to steer the right course in the toughest cases. Having led the team that achieved a comprehensive win for General Electric (GE) against Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) in a patent dispute relating to GE's latest generation of Haliade-X wind turbines to be installed at Dogger Bank off the UK coast – Stephen’s team also won UK Impact Case of the Year award at the Managing IP Awards 2023 (GE v Siemens) and in 2024 (Rhodia v Neo). He also continues to pursue a damages claim for chemicals giant Solvay (Rhodia) in its patent action relating to automotive exhaust catalysts following the court of appeal victory on validity and infringement.

Stephen is a trusted pair of hands with business-critical litigation cases involving clients in the life sciences sector and is in high demand with pharmaceutical companies. For example his advice to Merck Sharp and Dohme (MSD) in its dispute with Halozyme in relation to genetically engineered enzymes; and Moderna in relation to its dispute with GSK over mRNA technology.

In the tech sector, has advised Astronics Advanced Electronic Systems Corp. (Astronics AES), an industry leading manufacturer of aircraft electrical power systems, in a UK patent infringement action brought against it by Lufthansa Technik.
