Career
Santiago is a senior associate in our international arbitration group in New York. His practice focuses on commercial and investor-State arbitrations in Latin America. He has advised clients in a wide variety of sectors, including telecommunications, financial services, energy, infrastructure, mining, agribusiness and airport services, and has acted in arbitrations under the ICC, LCIA, CIETAC, ICSID, ICSID Additional Facility and UNCITRAL rules, both in English and Spanish.
Santiago teaches international arbitration in graduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Montevideo and frequently writes and speaks on relevant topics of arbitration in Latin America. Santiago is also actively involved in several arbitration organizations, including as member of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution-American Arbitration Association (ICDR-AAA) Young & International (Y&I) Board and as vice-chair of the Inter Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) Cross-Border Investment Committee, among others.
He graduated as a lawyer from the University of Montevideo and obtained his Master of Laws (LL.M) at Harvard Law School. Before joining Freshfields, Santiago worked at leading law firms in Uruguay and China, advising international clients in different areas, including M&A, litigation, arbitration and large construction and renewable energy projects. Santiago speaks Spanish and English fluently, and basic Portuguese and Mandarin. He is admitted to practice law in New York and Uruguay.
