He advises mid-size to Fortune 500 businesses on the development, protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights, and he counsels on decisions concerning company growth, management, transactions and sustainability.

A key part of Richard’s practice involves protecting the intellectual capital of individuals and companies. He makes it a point to learn his clients’ business and objectives and manages their global portfolios to align with their goals.

Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and having more than a decade of experience as an engineer in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, Richard helps clients apply for and protect U.S. and foreign patents relating to an array of diverse technologies in the chemical, pharmaceutical and material science industries. He works on subject matter related to photovoltaic materials, solar energy, semiconductor materials including extensive work in all aspects of crystal growth and crystallographic defect engineering and characterization, biofuels including enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Counseling clients on portfolio management, patent licensing, enforcement, product clearance, freedom-to-operate, validity, due diligence and general business matters, Richard provides an experienced interpretation of the organizational needs and the changing law. In addition, he advises on the strategic aspects of litigation when patents may be infringed.

Career

After receiving his degree in chemical engineering, Richard went to work for Amoco Chemical, providing technical support for specialty chemical manufacturing in Houston, Texas.

He left Amoco and began working for Mallinckrodt in St. Louis. At Mallinckrodt, Richard held a variety of technical and managerial positions associated with the manufacturing of chemical products for a variety of business areas including narcotics, specialty organics, laboratory chemicals, medical devices, plastic additives and cosmetic products.

While in law school, Richard worked full time as a manufacturing group leader with responsibility for several chemical manufacturing facilities at Mallinckrodt.
