Experience

Paul’s primary focus is providing market leading advice on patent related disputes in the electronics and medical devices sector. His practice is multi-jurisdictional with deep legal knowledge of the substantive and procedural laws in each jurisdiction. He advises clients in relation to licensing and strategic planning, but he is predominantly known for his contentious work.

In the electronics sector, Paul advises on a variety of noteworthy and complex cases regarding both assertion of patents and defence against infringement claims in disputes. For example, Paul led the team advising OPPO on two global disputes against Nokia and Philips relating to the terms of FRAND licences. Each of these cases were multifaceted, multi-jurisdictional disputes with the potential to significantly impact our clients’ global operations, and Paul coordinated the FRAND defences globally. In the Nokia case, Paul’s strategy kept OPPO on the market in the UK and the arguments were considered important enough for Mr Justice Meade to grant a very rare “leapfrog” appeal, where he gave OPPO permission to apply to appeal to the Supreme Court directly. Paul also advises in negotiations and is currently involved in matters for a number of clients in the IoT sphere negotiating with major SEP holders.

Paul also led the UK team advising Amazon in relation to a FRAND licence determination, as part of a global dispute with Nokia relating to video-coding technology, a case that was recognised as being one of the top 20 litigation cases in the UK in 2025 by The Lawyer. Prior to settlement, this case had the potential to set the direction in which the video patent licensing industry goes, and would have answered some key questions relating to the obligations on the holder of video SEPs. Paul also leads the team representing Amazon against InterDigital in a new UK claim.

Paul is a UPC Representative through his Irish qualification and is able to represent clients in UK and UPC proceedings. He represented Transsion against Qualcomm prior to that dispute settling.
