Paul Barker is a partner in the Bay Area office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP and a member of the Firm’s Sustainability Practice Group. Paul focuses on capital formation and investment by private investment fund sponsors and asset managers in cutting-edge private equity and private credit strategies, including energy transition, climate solutions, natural capital, carbon markets, and digital infrastructure. Paul is an experienced advisor and advocate whose practice intersects fund formation (across venture, growth, buyout, and infrastructure asset classes) and asset management transactions, portfolio investments, finance (including green and sustainability-linked loans, data center financings, and carbon offtake finance), regulatory advisory, impact value creation and reporting, and litigation matters. Paul is qualified in England, New York, and California and counsels clients on a broad range of cross-border matters under domestic law and international law, including sustainable finance regulation, compliance carbon markets (e.g. California Cap and Trade Program), and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Earlier in his career, Paul practiced as a barrister at the English Bar and as an international lawyer in Paris. Complementing his work in private practice, Paul has also held appointments as a lecturer at Columbia University in New York and lecturer-in-law at Stanford Law School.
