Nick’s international experience and skill set is rare and highly sought after, combining broad experience of advising international businesses on data protection / e-privacy regulatory matters and commercial / technology transactions with fluent Japanese language skills (spoken and written). With over 25 years’ experience of the Japanese market, Nick has advised a wide range of Japanese listed companies on cross-border matters spanning sectors including online services and entertainment, smart device apps and games, software development and licensing, Internet of Things, industrial manufacturing, engineering and construction, chemicals and industrial materials, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, energy and trading. These matters have reached from the UK and continental Europe to the Middle East, South-East Asia, the US and South America.
Nick trained as a solicitor in London and Tokyo with Baker McKenzie where he qualified in 2006 and worked for the firm’s highly regarded London IP/IT team. From 2007-2012, Nick worked in Tokyo for Herbert Smith’s corporate/TMT practice, where he advised numerous Japanese technology companies on their commercial expansion and investments in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Nick joined specialist UK technology firm White & Black in July 2012, where he founded the firm’s Japan practice. Since November 2017, Nick has been a partner at Lewis Mathys Emmerson LLP and heads the firm's Data Regulation practice.
