N. Patrick McDonald was admitted to practice in Jamaica in 1993. He was educated at the University of the West Indies and the Norman Manley Law School. He practised as an associate at another leading Jamaican law firm with a focus on commercial litigation until 1999. In that year, he left the private bar and entered the public service, joining FINSAC Limited, an agency under the Ministry of Finance & Planning set up by the Jamaican Government to restructure the local financial sector. While at FINSAC, Patrick worked in the Managing Director's office and later headed a department which had responsibility for, among other things, monitoring the process of rehabilitation and divestment of local financial institutions. He joined the firm in September 2002.
In private practice, Patrick has appeared before courts in Jamaica and the British Virgin Islands on various commercial litigation matters. He currently practices primarily in the areas of company law, securities law, financial services, mergers and acquisitions, and debt and equity capital market transactions.
He is a director of two publicly listed companies (Carreras Limited and Portland JSX Limited) as well as Independent Radio Company Limited, Television Jamaica Limited and other electronic media entities within the publicly listed RJRGleaner Communications Group. He served as a Member of the Office of Utilities Regulation from January 2016 to January 2021 and has also served on a number of other public and private sector boards.
Patrick is a member of the Commercial Law Committee of the Jamaican Bar Association and serves as the Honorary Legal Counsel for the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica. He has a keen interest in corporate governance and has regularly conducted training in corporate governance in association with entities such as the Jamaica Stock Exchange and the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica.
