Practice Areas

Martin is a leading projects partner who regularly advises network operators, infrastructure investors, government, head contractors and specialist contractors on the regulatory, transactional, financing and delivery aspects of major energy, infrastructure and construction projects. He is the national head of the firm's Projects, Infrastructure & Construction team and co-head of the Energy & Resources team.

Martin is recognised in the power sector as a leading expert on transactional and regulatory advice for transmission infrastructure, grid scale generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), wind and solar farms, gas power stations, water infrastructure and utilities. He has established a market-leading practice at the forefront of Australia's energy transition, advising on the critical infrastructure that is reshaping the National Electricity Market. His expertise spans the full project lifecycle from regulatory approvals and project financing through to commercial delivery under EPC, ECI, alliance, DBOM and O&M arrangements. Many of his transactions have been recognised as market-leading "firsts" in Australia or internationally, including advising on the first two grid scale battery projects in Australia.

Martin's practice focuses on the complex regulatory, commercial and financing arrangements underpinning Australia's largest energy infrastructure projects. He has advised on some of the most significant electricity transmission infrastructure projects of the last decade, including acting for ElectraNet on the $2.28bn SA-NSW Interconnector (Project EnergyConnect) and currently advising ElectraNet on the Northern Transmission Project, a major 275kV and 132kV transmission expansion to connect renewable energy sources and support industrial demand in South Australia's Mid North REZ. His transmission work encompasses complex regulatory advice on connections, access policies, contestable assets and contingent project applications before the Australian Energy Regulator, as well as structuring and negotiating delivery arrangements with major contractors and balance of plant suppliers.

Martin's renewable energy and energy transition work includes advising network operators, developers, investors and contractors on the financing and delivery of numerous wind farm developments, grid-scale BESS projects and gas power stations supporting firming capacity. He also advises on major water and utilities infrastructure projects for leading infrastructure investors, government clients and operators, covering both greenfield development and operational arrangements including innovative multi-utility district energy schemes.

Martin previously advised the South Australian Government on the proposed $13bn Port Bonython Hydrogen Hub and the Office of Hydrogen Power South Australia on the proposed Hydrogen Jobs Plan.
