Makoto Hattori, a partner of the firm, joined the firm in 1998. He is a lawyer admitted in Japan and New York and also a Japan registered patent attorney.
He has focused on patent and trade secret litigations, representing both domestic and international clients in diverse fields such as machinery, chemistry, telecommunication technology and heavy industry. Some of his recent activities include also acting as counsel for either IP holders or importers in connection to law enforcement at the border, and taking part in lawsuits and consultations concerning employee inventions.
In one of his recent achievements, he represented Fujifilm as lead counsel in several patent infringement cases against Sony relating to recording medium, and won three patent infringement cases before the Tokyo district court and one case before the IP High Court. For one of the cases, we obtained a judgement granting the second highest damages award in history of Japanese patent infringement cases.
In another case, he represented a major manufacture of cash handling machines in several patent infringement lawsuits, and achieved a favorable settlement for client. He has also represented several major international companies in cases including provisional injunction against patent infringement and patent infringement lawsuit.
