Kartik specialises in banking litigation and sanctions disputes, with a particular focus on complex, multi-jurisdictional claims involving financial institutions, sovereign entities and high-net-worth individuals. He is one of a small number of UK solicitors with direct experience of acting against major City and international banks in sanctions-related proceedings before the English courts.
He is dual-qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales and the Republic of Ireland, and as an advocate in India — a combination that underpins his work in disputes involving Indian banking institutions in UK proceedings, including acting for eight defendants in a successful jurisdiction challenge to a US$45 million claim brought by Punjab National Bank. He has represented clients in finance and banking matters in UK and European courts and international arbitrations.
Recent work includes acting in the Central Bank of Venezuela v Bank of England ongoing dispute over Venezuela's sovereign gold reserves (The Lawyer Top 20 Cases 2023), in which opponents include Allen & Overy, Herbert Smith and Quinn Emanuel, and the landmark Bank Mellat v HM Treasury Supreme Court litigation (The Lawyer Top 20 Cases 2013 and 2015) — an eight-year sanctions dispute resulting in a US$1.6 billion damages claim issued by a private Iranian bank, later settled by the UK Government.
Kartik is recognised for his responsiveness, tactical judgment and client focus in high-stakes proceedings. He is a recognised thought leader in finance and sanctions, with publications in Law360, the Law Gazette, WorldECR and Law.com International on the legal and commercial implications of UK, EU and US sanctions regimes.
