Career
Mr. López has 28 years of experience in criminal, civil and commercial litigation. After getting his LL.M. degree at Harvard Law School in 1996, he got deeply involved in the implementation of the criminal procedure reform in Chile that started in 2000. Since then, he has been widely recognized, both academically and professionally, as an expert in Chilean criminal procedure and ranked as one of the best criminal layers in Chile by different market research publications.
Mr. López is also a professor of Criminal Procedure and Trial Litigation at the University of Chile Law School since 1998. He has been elected twice as one of the 19 members of the Board of Directors of the Chilean Bar Association; and has been involved in the most important white collar criminal cases of the country.
Since 2015 he has been leading the criminal defense team in charge of the defense of the controllers shareholders of the PENTA Group (Carlos Eugenio Lavín and Carlos Alberto Délano), who were investigated in criminal proceedings filed on grounds of alleged tax offenses and bribery in connection with irregular financing of political campaigns (“PENTA Case”). He is currently representing Municipalidad de Vitacura, as complainant in a criminal complaint regarding crimes of embezzlement of public funds and bribery, and defending Carlos Alberto Delano in an investigation for the alleged crime of bribery that also involves the President Sebastian Piñera, in connection with the acquisition of the Dominga mine.
