Practice Areas

Mr. Xu Jianfeng concentrates his practice on insurance, maritime, complex tort, personal injury, products liability, common corporate and commercial matters. 

He regularly advises domestic and overseas underwriters on policy liability, investigates sinking of the insured ships and collision, recovers for cargo damage, and defends against third party claims under various liability policies. He also advises clients on compliance and regulatory matters. He defends domestic and foreign manufacturers against claims for product liability and also takes recovery against those who contributed to or caused the defect of the product in problem.

Thanks to his working experience with a property and casualty insurance company Mr. Xu has much understanding with insurance industry and is able to think from not only legal aspect, but also business aspect. Since 2012 he has been ranked as a notable practitioner in Chambers & Partners Asia-Pacific (Insurance, PRC Firms).

With two decade’s practice in China, Mr. Xu has extensive experience with PRC proceedings. He appeared before the Supreme People's Court of China in some influential cases, and succeeded in protecting foreign owners by having the Supreme Court overrule one judgment granted by local provincial High Court which was much unfavourable to clients. He also succeeded in a tough recovery against the party providing the contaminated chilli with Sudan Dye to a major supplier of KFC for the underwriter of product liability policy through litigation.

He succeeded in recover against a Chinese underwriter for a foreign underwriter applying double insurance rules under the Maritime Code for the first time. He defended underwriters and various London syndicates against a hull insurance claim arsing from unreasonably high berthing fees for repair happened in Brazil.
