Huawei Sun specialises in international arbitration and has broad experience representing international and Chinese clients resolving a wide variety of cross-border disputes conducted under all major arbitration rules, including the HKIAC, ICC, LCIA, SIAC, CIETAC, LME, UNCITRAL and ICSID arbitration rules. Described as “absolutely first-rate, incredibly astute”, Huawei has extraordinary experience in managing complex and multi-jurisdictional disputes in a wide range of areas, including the emerging areas such as cryptocurrency, data security and sanctions. She is particularly well-recognised in the field of international investment arbitration, with significant experience from a number of cases and hearings involving China. Huawei has achieved the first victory for China in Ansung Housing Co., Ltd. v. People’s Republic of China and is currently representing both Chinese investors and the Chinese government in investor-State matters and proceedings.
As an experienced advocate, Huawei regularly appears before international tribunals as lead counsel or co-counsel.
Huawei Sun is also an experienced arbitrator. Since 2009, she has served as sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator or presiding arbitrator in more than 70 domestic and international arbitration cases.
• In Goh Chin Soon v. People’s Republic of China, PCA Case No. 2021-30, assisting MOFCOM in defending the People’s Republic of China against the claim brought by a Singaporean investor
• In Jason Yu Song v. People’s Republic of China, PCA Case No. 2019-39, assisting MOFCOM in defending the People’s Republic of China against the claim brought by a UK investor
• In Ansung Housing Co., Ltd. v. People’s Republic of China, ICSID Case No. ARB/14/25, assisted MOFCOM in defending the People’s Republic of China against the claim brought by a Korean investor with a complete success
