Lawyer Fang Tan is the director of Shanghai Family & Family Law Firm. Her main areas of practice are divorce disputes, property disputes, negotiation and mediation, foreign-related marriage, equity disputes, gift disputes, inheritance disputes, family wealth management and inheritance planning, etc.

Career

Tan is the deputy director of the Marriage and Family Law Committee of the All China Lawyers Association, the director of the China Marriage and Family Law Association, a well-known domestic marriage law expert, an adjunct professor and master tutor of Renmin University of China, East China University of Political Science and Law and other universities.

Tan has been practicing for 19 years. Prior to that, she served as a judge for 11 years. She has always devoted himself to the field of marriage and family affairs, representing more than 2,600 family cases, among which many well-known cases in China were reported by CCTV-1 Legal Report, and some cases were rated as the Top Ten Influential Cases of the Year by the Supreme People's Court.

Since 2013, Tan has served as family legal adviser for the head offices of many top private banks, trust companies, family offices and other institutions in China, and as private lawyers for presidents of listed companies, well-known entrepreneurs, celebrities and stars, providing wealth planning schemes for individuals or families, involving assets of 500 billion yuan.

Work Highlights

Tan has extensive research and practical experience in family litigation and private wealth management, particularly adept at handling complex and difficult cases. She has successfully represented China’s first case of guardianship for boy-girl twins in surrogacy, and many cases have been selected into the typical case collection of the Supreme People's Court.

In 2004, Tan set up the earliest team of marriage and family lawyers in China, and handled thousands of marriage and family affairs and inheritance cases.

In 2013, Tan expanded her practice to private wealth management, and served as the family legal adviser of the private banking head office of China Merchants Bank, issuing wealth planning legal plans for thousands of private customers.

In 2018, Tan founded China's first law firm to provide legal services for family offices. On the basis of the original core team, Tan created a strong wealth management team including professional consultants in the fields of banking, trust, insurance, finance and taxation, immigration, etc. For the first time, Tan innovatively proposed the concept of “legal quotient” in the wealth management areas. With the working concept of family non-litigation, she advocated using the wisdom of “legal quotient” to plan wealth in advance, which was highly recognized by all walks of life and became the industry benchmark of Chinese lawyers in the private wealth management.

In 2021, Tan led the core team to establish Shanghai Family & Family Law Firm, which is specialized in marriage, family affairs and wealth inheritance and set up "eight centers" including a family litigation center, a family mediation center, a will service center, a wealth inheritance center, a psychological counseling center, a marriage guidance center, a family education center, and a family culture construction center, providing one-stop, refined and all-round services for the inheritance needs of private customers and family businesses, and innovating the service mode of marriage and inheritance cases.

Tan is also a research-oriented expert lawyer with national influence in the field of wealth management and family law. She has published ten professional works in this field, participated in the legislative proposals of draft of the Book Five Marriage and Family and Book Six Succession of the Civil Code for many times, and wrote many written opinions and suggestions.
