Dário Moura Vicente is an Arbitrator, Advocate, and Legal Expert in independent practice, based in Lisbon. His primary areas of expertise include international contracts, commercial and investment arbitration, and intellectual property.

He was admitted to the Portuguese Bar in 1987. From 1990 to 1994, he served as Legal Advisor to the Council of Ministers of Portugal. He was a partner at Barros Sales & Associados from 1994 to 2012 and then served as Of Counsel at Serra Lopes, Cortes Martins & Associados from 2012 to 2022. In 2023, he established his own practice.

Career

Dário Moura Vicente has served as a Full Professor (Catedrático) at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon since 2010. He has held several other teaching positions in various countries throughout his career. Notably, he lectured at The Hague Academy of International Law in 2008, at Paris V University in 2010, at Urbino University in 2011, and at Complutense University of Madrid in 2012.

In addition to these positions, he has taught extensively as a Visiting Professor at Universities in several Portuguese-speaking countries and territories. Some of these include Agostinho Neto University in Luanda, Angola; Brasília, São Paulo, and Minas Gerais Universities in Brazil; Salgaocar College of Law in Goa, India; and Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo, Mozambique. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor at the Law School of the University of Macau in China.

Professional Memberships

Dário Moura Vicente served as Vice President of Portugal’s largest arbitration institution, the Centre for Commercial Arbitration of the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, from 2016 to 2019. He then held the position of Chair of the Portuguese Arbitration Association from 2019 to 2023.

He is a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, the German Arbitration Institute, the Arbitration Committee of the International Bar Association, the International Council for Commercial Arbitration, and the London Court of International Arbitration.

Dário Moura Vicente is a member of the ICSID panels of arbitrators and conciliators, appointed by the Portuguese Government. Additionally, he is part of the arbitration rosters for several organizations, including: (i) the Lisbon and Oporto Commercial Arbitration Centres, as well as ARBITRARE – Centre for Arbitration in Industrial Property, Domain Names, Trademarks, and Denominations; (ii) the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce in Brazil, CAMARB – Chamber of Mediation and Business Arbitration in Brazil, and the Chamber for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration CIESP/FIESP; (iii) the Cape Verde Chamber of Commerce; (iv) the Centre for Extrajudicial Resolution of Disputes of Angola (CREL); (v) the Centre for Arbitration, Mediation, and Conciliation of Mozambique (CACM); and (vi) the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC).

Dário Moura Vicente is the current President of the Instituto Hispano-Luso-Americano de Derecho Internacional (IHLADI) and serves as a Vice-President of the Deutsch-Lusitanische Juristenvereinigung (DLJV). He is also an associate member of the Académie Internationale de Droit Comparé (AIDC) and a member of the International Law Association (ILA). Additionally, he chairs the General Assembly and is a member of the Scientific Council of the European Association of Private International Law (EAPIL), as well as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich.

In Portugal, he is the President of the Scientific Council of the Portuguese Society of International Law, the President of the Board of Directors of the Private Law Research Centre at the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, and the President of the Portuguese Society for Intellectual Property Law.

Personal

Dário Moura Vicente graduated in Law from the Portuguese Catholic University in 1985. He also completed a postgraduate course in European Studies in 1987 and earned his LLM degree in 1990. In 2000, he obtained his PhD in Law, graduating magna cum laude, and in 2009, he was awarded the title of Aggregate in Law, both from the University of Lisbon.
