Daniel Villanueva Plasencia is a partner of the Intellectual Property Practice Group at Baker McKenzie Guadalajara. He has extensive experience in data privacy, information and cybersecurity security matters; in regulatory issues related to information technologies and consumer protection; in intellectual and industrial property, especially focused on digital environments, including the use and licensing of trademarks, patents and copyrights. Daniel is a Certified Information Privacy Administrator (CIPM) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals.

Before joining the Firm, he was a founding partner of a local firm in Guadalajara. During the last five years, Daniel has taught the intellectual property class at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, one of the most prestigious universities in Mexico.

Daniel works with clients in a variety of industries, particularly in matters where there is an intersection between intellectual property and technology. Daniel assists technology companies in cross-border transactions, drafting and negotiating commercial agreements, including the negotiation of licenses for the use of software and other innovative technologies. Daniel also advises developers of software, hardware, video games, social networks, e-commerce and Internet companies worldwide on regulatory restrictions, intellectual property, data privacy and security. Daniel provides advice on global data privacy, data protection, cybersecurity, digital media, and other legal and regulatory issues.

Daniel has experience in all aspects of data privacy and protection planning and implementation; licensing and transfer of technology, including trademarks, patents, copyrights and trade secrets; franchising and confidentiality; and handles domain name disputes and other infringements in Mexico and internationally. He also has experience in rights of publicity, talent representation, media and entertainment issues, such as online broadcasting, rights negotiation, negotiations with partnerships and content licensing. Daniel has assisted companies of all sizes—ranging from Fortune 500 to small businesses—in responding to cybersecurity incidents, including ransomware attacks, fund transfer fraud, data breaches, and business email compromise matters. Daniel takes an end-to-end approach to cybersecurity and data protection, from threat intelligence and proactive risk management measures, through immediate crisis response, to follow-on investigations and litigation.
