Career
Christophe Bondy has practiced international arbitration for over 25 years. He has taken on substantive and leading roles in high-stakes, cutting-edge international commercial and investor-State arbitrations for both private parties and sovereigns, under all major rule systems.
Christophe is particularly experienced in claims in the energy sector, where he has worked on disputes involving pipelines, LNG delivery, construction of gasification and liquefaction plants, and regulatory approvals, among others. He has also handled complex disputes regarding intellectual property; delivery of complex services in relation to large-scale international projects; concession agreements; and generally, disputes involving States and arising out of complex regulatory environments. He regularly leads large cross-border teams in multi-year arbitrations, and performs his own advocacy in English and French.
In investment treaty arbitrations, Christophe has taken a leading role in some of the highest profile cases yet decided. As lead counsel to Canada for nearly a decade in NAFTA Chapter Eleven arbitrations, and as private sector counsel to multiple sovereigns and private claimants, he has addressed and considered in depth virtually all procedural and substantive issues arising in international investment law, from both the State and the investor perspective. His cases have made a substantial contribution to the development of international law in this field.
Christophe also has deep experience as counsel in the negotiation of international trade and investment agreements. He was senior counsel to Canada in the negotiation of the Canada – European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), with particular emphasis on services and investment chapters. He has negotiated treaties with countries around the world and advised States on both strategic and compliance issues, up to the highest levels of government. He has provided capacity building and advisory services to States around the world.
Christophe has extensive experience in advisory work on multiple aspects of public international law, including the law of state responsibility, sovereign and diplomatic immunities, and international intellectual property law.
