Briony Cartmell

Briony is an associate in the litigation and arbitration team with a particular interest in art and cultural heritage law.

She has worked on art-related matters such as complex multi-jurisdictional title disputes; art fraud; exhibitions infringing intellectual property rights; gallery insolvencies; bailment; navigating co-ownership of collections; advising on artist's resale rights; copyright and moral rights disputes; royalty issues; and suspected forgery.

Having trained at Withers, she also has broad experience of complex international and domestic disputes involving civil fraud, professional negligence, shareholder disputes, insolvency, forfeiture orders, enforcement, and contractual and tortious commercial issues.

Briony is a member of the Art Lawyers Association and the International Catalogue Raisonné Association, and is currently studying the Diploma in Art Law with the Institute of Art and Law.

Before her legal career, Briony studied for a master's degree in Arts Management at the University of Bologna, interning and writing her postgraduate thesis at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on their international strategy.
