Career

Amalia leads on challenges against the imposition of UK sanctions. She is an expert in both immigration and financial sanctions regulations, UK sanctions compliance and sanctions enforcement.

Amalia also has experience assisting with asylum and international protection claims and appeals brought before the Immigration Tribunals.

Amalia works closely with teams of professional advisors both in the UK and overseas. She is frequently appointed as case coordinator and principal point of contact on some of the Sanctions Team’s most complex cases. Her clients acknowledge her to be a highly organised and strong communicator, and value her calming presence, particularly during challenging periods.In a landmark challenge to the EU sanctions regime, Amalia assisted with collating compelling evidence to demonstrate that the material relied upon by the Council of the EU against two of the firm’s clients was inaccurate and insufficient to justify their inclusion on the EU sanctions list. The EU General Court annulled both the initial act and the subsequent acts of maintaining restrictive measures against our clients.

Amalia’s ability to work with high-profile and demanding clients, her understanding of complex legal and factual issues and ability to manage teams, in what are often high-pressured and sensitive circumstances, make her a proven leader.

Amalia’s previous experience within Gherson’s Inbound Immigration team means she has an in-depth knowledge of all facets of UK immigration. Prior to joining Gherson, Amalia gained property law experience by working in residential and commercial real estate.
