AVM Advogados was founded by António Vicente Marques in 2003. The firm originally began assisting clients as a full-service law firm operating through its various offices in Africa and Europe with an integrated team. Main Areas of Practice:  

Banking & Finance:
AVM has a specialist banking and finance practice in the areas of syndicated lending; and acquisition finance, asset finance, project finance, financial regulatory, insolvency and restructuring, capital markets, structured debt and structured finance. AVM provides legal services to leading investment banks, insurance companies, other financial institutions, private entities and governmental agencies.

Capital Markets:
The capital markets lawyers advise issuers, underwriters, placement agents and initial purchasers in public and private offerings of securities. They advise on private equity, equity-linked and asset-backed securities, derivatives and structured products. Their experience covers debt issues, all types of equity-linked issues, securitisations and market derivative products.

Construction & Infrastructure:
AVM has advised several construction companies and consortiums on all aspects relating to the development and construction of the most significant infrastructure projects in the jurisdictions where it operates. It advises on procurement strategy and contract structures.

AVM offers clients specialist advice on all aspects of corporate transactions frequently with a cross-border perspective. It acts for many international corporate and investment banking clients and consortiums which it regularly advises on mergers and acquisitions in Portugal, Angola and Mozambique.

Dispute Resolution:
The litigation team has extensive in international and crossborder litigation, arbitration and alternative dispute resolution. The majority of its work is for corporate clients across a wide range of business sectors. A significant proportion of its work is international. The group has expertise in disputes relating to international finance and trade; debt restructuring and insolvencies, shipping, construction disputes, energy, insurance, telecoms.

Employment & Immigration:
AVM’s lawyers have experience in advising clients on all aspects of the labour law, including drafting employment agreements, compliance, conducting disciplinary procedures, negotiating dismissals, court actions and advising on operations involving staff transfers and collective dismissals. In the immigration area, the team has many years of experience in all issues related to entry procedures such as permanent residency, citizenship law, naturalisation, deportation and visas.

Energy & Natural Resources:
AVM has a specialist energy practice in the areas of oil and gas, electricity, water sectors and alternative energies. It provides legal services to power producers; oil and gas producers and transporters; power plants; trade associations; energy developers, investors and lenders involved in and with the energy industry, as well as to several different service providers to the oil and gas industry.

Intellectual Property:
AVM’s intellectual property team has many years of experience on all aspects relating to IP, including patents, trademarks, industrial designs, and geographic indications of source and copyright. They provide legal services in the registration, maintenance and protection of trademarks for a vast number of national and international companies.

Real Estate & Planning:
AVM advises on issues relating to construction, development, property finance, tax, real estate litigation and environment. It has experience in advising on all aspects of real estate investment projects. It also works with developers, businesses and public authorities in relation to planning applications, appeals and the negotiation of infrastructure agreements. It also has experience in real estate finance.

Tax & Customs:
The tax team covers both national and international taxation, taxation on real estate, taxation of financial instruments and tax and customs litigation. The tax team provides innovative commercially driven solutions and practical tax advice to clients on a stand alone basis or as part of the firm’s representation on transactions.

The lawyers work extensively in the telecoms sector,media and IT and advise on national and international investment transactions; the structuring of joint ventures and acquisition of companies in the area of fixed and mobile networks. They also have experience in consortium agreements and the structuring of telecoms companies in the various countries where AVM operates.

AVM has a highly specialised shipping team with experience in wet and dry shipping matters; carriage of goods by sea; ship finance transactions and acting for lenders; ship registrations. It acts on enforcements; arrests and insurance claims. AVM’s aviation law experience extends to advising on carriage by air issues and associated passenger and cargo claims. It has advised on finance leases and operations leases and aircraft mortgages and liens.
