USA - Nationwide Appellate Law Legal Rankings

Ranking Tables

The Nationwide Appellate rankings highlight the legal industry’s foremost experts on state and federal appellate litigation, listing industry-leading lawyers and practice groups who regularly make appearances before the Supreme Court of the United States, federal circuit courts and state supreme courts in some of the most important and precedent-setting issues arising from business disputes, administrative challenges and constitutional interpretation.

The increasingly specialized field at the top end of the appellate market sees a small number of experts making regular appearances before the US Supreme Court, with former Supreme Court clerks and lawyers from the Office of the Solicitor General attracting high demand for their expertise when entering private practice. Indeed, the current rankings list five former Solicitors General and three Acting Solicitors General at the highest end of the table, while many of the other ranked attorneys have significant prior expertise arguing before the Supreme Court on behalf of the United States Government.

Early pioneers Mayer Brown, Sidley Austin, WilmerHale and Gibson Dunn, who were among the first to build specialized Supreme Court practices around appellate stalwarts such as Andrew Frey, Carter Phillips, Seth Waxman and Ted Olson, have more recently been joined by newer entrants such as Kirkland & Ellis and Paul Weiss, whose respective additions of Paul Clement and Kannon Shanmugam have demonstrated that the elite end of the appellate market remains an attractive proposition for law firms seeking to prove their credentials at the highest echelons of the litigation practice.
