About

Provided by Herbert Smith Freehills

Our premium Africa practice has been built over 30 years and is serviced by partners from across our global network of offices, including Johannesburg.

Our Africa practice group comprises a multidisciplinary team of industry experts with one of the largest teams of common and civil law lawyers dedicated almost exclusively to Africa work.

With experience advising in all of Africa's 54 jurisdictions and across all key industry sectors, we have a thorough understanding of the continent's local and regional legal systems, business practices, local cultures and socio-political considerations, and of the issues and realities of doing business in Africa. We have also built strong relationships with local counsel and other local players and authorities.

Our dispute resolution experience in Africa includes advising and representing parties to large, complex and high-value arbitrations across a range of industry sectors, including energy, natural resources, infrastructure and telecommunications. We also spend a significant amount of time behind the scenes advising clients on how to minimize their exposure to contentious risk.

Recent work highlights include advising BP on all contentious matters in multiple jurisdictions arising from the terrorist attack at the In Amenas gas processing facility in Algeria in January 2013; Goldman Sachs and Société Générale in claims brought by the Libyan Investment Authority; and Bharti Airtel on a series of disputes relating to its business in Nigeria.
