Practice Areas

With almost 20 years of fund formation and Hong Kong regulatory experience, Gaven specialises in the establishment and structuring of a diverse range of collective investment schemes including hedge funds, real estate funds, private equity arrangements, hybrid funds, and other private investment structures, as well as providing regulatory advice in relation to investment management activity generally. He is also a pioneer in the crypto fund formation and regulatory advice space, having helped obtain the first regulatory licences in Hong Kong for managing both a fund of crypto funds and, subsequently, a dedicated virtual assets fund.

Gaven represents a wide array of clients, from family offices and high-net-worth individuals to new managers at both startups and established institutions, across the digital assets and traditional finance sectors. With the increasing demand for fund structuring and asset management regulatory advice in the private capital and wealth spaces, Gaven's specialised practice is well-positioned to deliver significant value to private clients, complementing and enhancing their sophisticated financial strategies.

Gaven is widely recognised as a leading practitioner in FinTech and Investment Funds, with top rankings across the Chambers FinTech, Chambers Greater China Region, and Chambers Global guides. He is also recommended by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific, Lexology, and Who’s Who Legal for his expertise in private funds and asset management. Most recently, he was named a Growth Driver for Asset Management in China Business Law Journal’s The A‑List 2025–26.

Gaven is admitted to practise in Hong Kong, England & Wales and Western Australia. He speaks fluent English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
