Record-Breaking Rankings

The 2025 guide marks substantial expansion across multiple metrics:

  • Ranked departments increased from 525 in 2024 to 643 in 2025
  • 225 law firms recognised with at least one ranked team
  • 1,441 individual lawyers featured in the rankings
  • 11 star individuals and 185 lawyers achieving Band 1 status

The most competitive sections—Tax Law, Employment Law, and M&A—each received approximately 100 submissions, demonstrating robust engagement from the French legal community. These three practice areas also showed the most significant growth, with 9 new forms ranked in Employment and 7 new firms in Tax.

Leading Firms in the French Market

Among the 40 practice areas covered, several firms stand out in terms of ranked teams and lawyers:

Diversity in the Legal Profession

Chambers' commitment to diversity and inclusion continues to drive positive change in the industry:

  • Female lawyer representation increased from 25% in 2021 to approximately 30% in recent years
  • Significant variations exist across practice areas, with women representing only 13% in M&A and 15% in Private Equity of total ranked lawyers.
  • More balanced representation appears in Employment Law (47%), IP (40%), and Environmental Law (50%)

Chambers DEI team actively encourages firms to share initiatives regarding gender equality, social mobility, and inclusion policies addressing disabilities and discrimination.

Market Trends in Dispute Resolution

The French legal market shows significant evolution in dispute resolution practices:

Litigation Trends

  • Boutique firm growth: 129 submissions received for the Litigation section, with 60 from boutiques—a record number
  • Key dispute areas: M&A, stock market, and ESG-related cases dominate commercial disputes
  • Rise in mediation: Courts increasingly encourage mediation as either pre-litigation or an alternative dispute resolution method
  • Class action evolution: In March 2023 legislation established a universal procedural framework for class actions, expanding their scope beyond previous sectoral limitations

Arbitration Developments

  • International Arbitration received 73 submissions, including 18 from boutiques
  • High-activity sectors: Construction, renewable energy, and natural resources
  • Ongoing impact: BIT cases related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict continue to influence the French arbitration market

CSR and ESG: Growing Legal Priorities

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues have become increasingly significant:

  • The French Law on Duty of Vigilance (enacted 2017), combined with recent EU directives, has created growing compliance requirements
  • January 2024 saw the creation of a dedicated chamber at the Paris Judicial Court for "social, economic, and environmental" litigation
  • Companies face both legal and reputational risks
  • NGO-initiated legal actions have focused on biodiversity impact, water access issues, and deforestation
  • Law firms are expanding teams to address these critical client concerns
