The Chambers Latin America Guide 2027 reveals a legal market characterised by growing demand for legal services, increased client expectations, AI-driven transformation and a greater focus on commercially-informed legal advice.
In our latest guide we conducted thousands of interviews across 19 jurisdictions to uncover the trends shaping the Latin America legal market. This is a quick overview of what we discovered:
The LATAM legal market is in good health, enjoying a period of sustained legal demand driven by market change and complexity. 90% of respondents expect demand for external counsel to either increase or remain stable. In fact, 45.2% of those interviewed think it is likely that they will need more legal advice and services over the next 12 months.
Confidence is particularly strong in Peru, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile and Argentina where demand is being driven by economic, regulatory and general business transformation efforts across the region.
From a law firm perspective, the results are particularly positive. Only 5.1% of respondents expect to reduce their use of external counsel, while the overwhelming majority anticipate stable or increased demand.
Technical excellence is – and always will be – essential. However, clients have expanded their capabilities wish list, selecting firms who demonstrate a clear understanding of business realities.
This shift is most clearly seen in what clients say they now highly value. Commercial understanding and strategic advice aligned with corporate goals have become increasingly important. These qualities must be backed by exceptional client services – responsiveness, collaboration and a focus on long-term relationship building will help LATAM law firms stand out from their competitors.
The prioritisation of service and commercial understanding is reflected in where LATAM clients believe their law firm partners can improve. Client service (27%) and business understanding/commerciality (26%) were the most frequently mentioned areas of concern.
While women account for 25% of lawyer rankings across the Latin America Guide 2027, their representation varies significantly across the region. The Dominican Republic currently leads the way with 48% women rankings, setting a standard for other LATAM nations to follow.
The outlook is especially encouraging among emerging talent. Women account for 51% of lawyers recognised in the “Associate to Watch” category, highlighting their growing presence among the region's next generation of leading practitioners. This trend is particularly evident in Peru and Mexico, which record the highest numbers of Associate to Watch rankings. Women also perform particularly well in Mexico, accounting for the majority of “Star Associate” rankings.
Conversations with GCs and law firm representatives consistently highlight the growing importance of artificial intelligence in the LATAM region. Technology has moved from a theoretical discussion to a practical concern for stakeholders on both sides of the legal services divide.
Clients now expect their external legal advisors to use technology to deliver faster, more efficient and more cost-effective services, while maintaining the quality and depth of their advice. This is leading to discussions about the service delivery and traditional per hour billing model
One counter-intuitive insight we uncovered was that despite virtually everyone talking about AI, just 1% of those surveyed identified it as an area of improvement for law firms. Outlook: Commercial understanding drives success
Demand for legal services remains strong across the entire LATAM region, with an overwhelming majority of legal service buyers expecting their need for external counsel to either increase or remain stable over the next 12 months. As business navigates increasingly complex regulatory, commercial and operational challenges, law firms are likely to benefit from sustained demand for sophisticated legal advice.
It is also important to realise that client prioritisation of commercial value over purely technical expertise is unlikely to change. Business understanding and commercial awareness are the hallmarks of a firm positioned for LATAM success.
Artificial intelligence is a major talking point for both clients and law firms. While AI was rarely identified as an area for improvement, conversations across the region highlight growing expectations around the, use of technology, efficiency and how work is measured and billed too.
It will be interesting to see how these challenges are approached over the coming year – particularly whether AI moves from a widely discussed topic to a defining factor in client expectations as we gather data for the 2028 Latin America Guide.
Demand is growing, confidence is high and the LATAM legal market shows no signs of slowing down.
Commercial awareness has become a key differentiator in the race to win and retain clients.
Currently clients place greater value on service quality and business understanding than they do about firms' AI capabilities.
Increasing market sophistication is driving demand for more specialised legal expertise, reflected in the expansion of several ranking tables across the region.
Women are achieving strong representation among emerging talent, signalling a more balanced future for the region's legal profession.
