Practice Areas
Tomas Sokol specializes primarily in criminal and civil law, in which he belongs amongst the most respectable lawyers in the Czech Republic. With Lukas Trojan, they co-lead the criminal law branch of our dispute resolution department, which has achieved a dominant position on the Czech legal market, has gained experience and outstanding reputation in defending clients throughout the years, especially those accused of the sc. white-collar crimes (e.g. influencing of public procurement, wide-scale fraud, including subsidy and tax frauds, bribery, money laundering or harming of financial interests of the European Union).
Regarding the area of criminal law, Tomas Sokol provides clients with comprehensive legal advice and represents them in connection with threatened or pending criminal proceedings. He also assists clients, corporate entities, with the preparation and application of compliance management, which is important for any possible imposition of their criminal liability. In this context, he also participates in internal investigations of reported compliance incidents and evaluation of their impact on the company's operations.
Tomas Sokol has considerable expertise in litigation, as well as ad-hoc arbitration of various kinds, including contractual disputes, damages claims, commercial and shareholder disputes, or disputes arising from insolvency proceedings.
Tomas Sokol also provides clients with comprehensive legal advice in the field of civil law in its entire scope, including contractual law, real estate law, employment, family and inheritance law. He is also a prominent expert for the area of ICT law and sport law.
Career
Tomas Sokol graduated from the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague. Since 1980, when he passed the bar exam, he has been practicing law continuously, except for the years 1990-1992, when he served as a city prosecutor in Prague and subsequently as Minister of the Interior of the Czech Republic.
He is one of the founding members of the Union of Advocates of the Czech Republic and a member of its presidium.
He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Czech Bar Association (hereinafter referred to as "CBA"), where he serves as the Chairman of the Criminal Law Section. He is also a member of the CBA's Bar Law Section and IT and GDPR Section. In 2009, he received the award "For his contribution to the Czech Bar Association" from the President of the CBA. Since 2004 he has also been registered as an attorney of the Slovak Bar Association. Since 1997, he has also held the position of Examination Commissioner for Criminal Law at the CBA Examinations and he serves on the CBA ´s Commission for the Recodification of the Criminal Procedure Code.
He is also a member of the Arbitration Commission of the Czech Volleyball Federation and has been a member of the Arbitration Commission of the Czech Basketball Federation for about 25 years, where he has served as its chairman since 2010.
In addition to the aforementioned, he is a teaching assistant at the Department of Public Law and Public Administration of the CEVRO Institute o.p.s., Prague 1 and is registered in the List of Arbitrators of the Czech Ministry of Justice.
Publications
Tomas Sokol is the author of numerous articles published in Czech daily press and is often asked for his views on current legal issues or current political affairs. He publishes his expert articles in Bulletin of Advocacy, Legal Advisor, Advokátní deník, EPRAVO magazine, etc.
He also participated in the creation of the publications Computer Law, Law of Information and Telecommunication Systems, Code of Ethics for Attorneys-Commentary, Security of Information Systems.
