Practice Areas
Sophie is a Corporate & Projects partner based in Amsterdam specialising in energy law. She has been on the forefront of the energy market since 1999 and has gained extensive experience in the energy and utilities sector.
She advises clients in respect of projects, transactions, commercial contracts and corporate structuring. Over the years, she has built a first-class energy practice focussing on:
- Project structuring and development including wind parks (onshore and offshore), (floating) solar parks, nuclear plants, biomass, green gas and hydrogen plants and BES;
- M&A transactions in the energy sector; and
- Commercial contracting such as the construction agreements in relation to project development, but also contracting in respect of innovative structures such as corporate PPAs.
She also advises - together with the relevant Bird & Bird teams - on real estate aspects in relation to renewables projects and regulatory aspects of project development.
Career
Sophie heads up the Dutch Energy & Utilities team and co-heads the Global Renewables Group. She is a non-executive board member for two renewables companies.
She has extensive experience of providing strategic and board-level legal advice on all aspects of the energy market.
Before joining the team at Bird & Bird in 2016, Sophie worked in-house where she led the legal side of multi-billion Euro cross border projects and for other international law firms.
Professional Memberships
Sophie is a member of professional associations including the Dutch Energy Law Association (NeVER), the International Bar Association (IBA) and the UK Society of Construction Law. She is dual qualified in the Netherlands and the UK.
