Marc Parrott

Practice Areas

Marc Parrott is a Partner in the Corporate Department of Appleby’s Hong Kong office.

He maintains a diverse funds practice that includes structuring, formation and advising on the ongoing operation of offshore investment funds in the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and British Virgin Islands, including liquid asset funds (such as hedge funds, credit funds and crypto funds), private equity (including LBO, growth, and real estate), private debt (including mezzanine and distressed) and venture capital funds. He also regularly assists with the establishment of offshore investment management businesses in these jurisdictions.

Career

Marc has over 20 years of offshore and onshore experience, including having lived and practised in the Cayman Islands for approximately 8 years prior to relocating to Hong Kong in 2014. Prior to moving offshore, Marc obtained top-tier international transactional experience having practised in Australia with Freehills (now Herbert Smith Freehills), and in London with Linklaters.

Marc was admitted as a solicitor of each of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia and the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia in 1999 (non-practising). He was admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 2003 (non-practising). He was first admitted as an Attorney-at-Law in the Cayman Islands in 2003 and most recently was admitted in the British Virgin Islands in 2016.

Marc is recognised in the three leading legal directories Chambers Global, Legal 500 and IFLR 1000. He has been named as a key lawyer in the Hong Kong office by Legal 500 and as a “Rising Star Partner” by IFLR 1000 in the field of investment funds. Chambers Global has highlighted that he is adept at handling both open-ended and closed-ended fund formations.

Clients noted to Legal 500 that Marc is “my go-to offshore investment funds lawyer” and “he is always recommended … when I am approached for referrals”. Marc has been involved in the China Working Group established by Cayman Finance, the body that represents the interests of the Cayman Islands financial industry overseas. Marc is also a member of The Law Society of England & Wales.

As a regular contributor on investment funds-related articles, Marc’s writings have featured, and he has been referenced, in numerous publications and websites, including IFLR, Asian Legal Business, China Business Law Journal, Hong Kong Business and IFC Review.

In addition, Marc has spoken, and participated in panel discussions at numerous fund industry conferences, including events organised by the Alternative Investment Management Association, HFM, the Hong Kong Venture Capital Association and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
