Iain Edwards
Iain Edwards is a respected practitioner who attracts praise for his deep knowledge of international criminal law. He has spent a considerable amount of time representing individuals accused of genocide and crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. He has also appeared before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon in The Hague

Recent work: Defended Marie Rose Fatuma, who, along with her co-defendants, was charged with knowingly interfering with the administration of justice. She is alleged to have bribed and interfered with witnesses whose evidence was used to secure the conviction of a former Rwandan government minister for a 1994 genocide.

Practice Areas

Iain is a seasoned barrister with particular expertise in international criminal law. For the last seven years he has been one of a small handful of leading juniors ranked by C&P in international crime. He prides himself on his meticulous preparation and intelligent trial strategy.

In July 2021, Iain was appointed by the ICC as counsel for an alleged leader of the Janjaweed, charged with 31 counts of crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur, Sudan. He is also appointed in the appeal of a client in a multi-handed contempt case before the IRMCT in Arusha, Tanzania.

Iain was previously counsel for the former head of the Serbian state security service before the IRMCT in The Hague. Between 2012 and 2016, he was counsel for a senior Hezbollah commander accused of terrorism before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Between 2009 and 2012, Iain was a legal adviser in three defence teams representing clients charged with genocide and crimes against humanity before the ICTR in Arusha. He is on the list of approved counsel at the Kosovo Specialist Chamber.

Iain has a developing interest in all areas of national and international sanctions work, and represents a client before the UN’s Ombudsperson to the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee.

He is accredited by the BSB to undertake public access work. He is regularly invited to provide training and to speak at international conferences, particularly on defence issues. He is fluent in French.
