Iain is a seasoned barrister specialising in serious crime. He has a particular expertise in international criminal law. For the last five years Iain has been one of a small handful of leading juniors ranked by C&P in international crime. Clients regularly comment favourably on his down-to-earth, unpretentious approach.
Since 2017, Iain has been counsel before the IRMCT in The Hague for the defence of the former head of the Serbian state security service, on trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes. He has been assigned as counsel for witnesses, and has consulted for defence teams, before the ICC. Between 2012 and 2016, Iain was counsel for a senior Hezbollah commander accused of terrorism before the Special Tribunal for Lebanon. Between 2009 and 2012, he was a legal adviser in three defence teams representing clients charged with genocide and crimes against humanity before the ICTR in Arusha, Tanzania. He is on the list of approved counsel at the Kosovo Specialist Chamber.
Iain is registered to undertake public access work. He is regularly invited to provide training and to speak at international conferences, particularly on defence issues. He is fluent in French.
