Douglas has a wealth of experience in dealing with high value, high profile instructions, with a practice that covers all aspects of planning legal work. Whilst his focus is often on the resolution of contentious applications by negotiation or, where necessary, representing clients before the Courts or at inquiry, much of his time is spent on providing clients with strategic advice and working as a key member of a project team. This includes working with planning authorities who, of course, wish to ensure that their decision-making processes are robust and as free from challenge as possible
Douglas is the Head of our Planning Law team and advises public sector, business and commercial and private clients on all aspects of planning law.
Douglas has spent his career advising on significant development proposals, and disputes arising from those developments.
A particular focus has been on compulsory purchase, acting for acquiring authorities and affected landowners. Douglas is a familiar face at public inquiry into the making of compulsory purchase orders and before the Lands Tribunal for Scotland, advising clients on disputed matters of compensation.
