Diego Cillóniz brings extensive experience and expertise in representing foreign investors in the mining, oil, and gas sectors. Before co-founding Cillóniz & Valencia Abogados, he worked as an associate at top-ranked firms such as Miranda & Amado and Estudio Grau (now CMS Grau). His background is further enriched by a 2-year tenure as regional legal counsel at Nystar, part of the Trafigura Group.
Diego’s expertise extends to advising junior mining companies, and he is highly regarded for his role as a legal representative, managing back-office operations for foreign investors during the exploration phase. As projects advance, Diego is frequently sought to provide counsel on complex M&A transactions, especially when junior projects are acquired by major mining operators.
His career highlights include serving as a key legal advisor during the exploration and later M&A phases of the Constancia and Marcobre projects, initially owned by Rio Tinto and now operated by Hudbay and Minsur, respectively.
Diego holds a master’s degree in mining and natural resource law from the University of Denver – Colorado, Sturm College of Law, and a law degree from the University of Lima.
