Aseem Chawla, Senior Advocate, is a Member of Bar Council of India & Fellow Chartered Account and a Certificate Holder of “Comparative Tax Policy & Administration” from Harvard Kennedy School & “Vienna Certificate in Double Tax Treaties” from Vienna University of Economics and Business, Austria.
He has also been recently conferred an Honorary Doctorate Award (HONORIS CAUSA), for his academic contribution in the field of Law.
He is an accredited Trust & Estate Practitioner and a Member of Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners, United Kingdom (STEP) and is well regarded for Estate Planning, including advising Large Families & Corporate Houses on Governance, Mediation, Evaluation of Alternate Forums of Dispute Redressal, Arbitration & Family Succession aspects.
He has over two decades of focussed experience in advising on a variety of Tax, Business and Legal matters, including International Tax, Representation & Litigation Practice, Corporate & Business Advisory, Exchange Control Regulatory, White-Collar Crime & Money Laundering Laws.
Aseem was earlier nominated by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, as a Non-Executive Independent Director on the Board of one of the Largest State-Owned General Insurance Companies and was the Co-Chair of its Audit Committee. He is also accredited with the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) – Independent Director’s Data Bank.
He was appointed, in January 2023, as The Senior Standing Counsel of the Income Tax Department for representing cases of the Department before the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi & other judicial for a in Delhi, prior to being designated as a Senior Advocate by the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi.
Aseem has served on several committees, Board(s) of large business houses and leading families & Charities, assisting them on the aspects of good governance, best practices, financial & legal oversight. Aseem has been nominated by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, as an Independent Director on the Board of Oriental Insurance Company Limited, one of the Largest State-Owned Insurance Companies.
He has been elected as the Member of the Executive Committee of International Fiscal Association (IFA) India Branch. He is the Former Secretary of the Taxes Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA) and is now nominated, as a member of its India Working Group (IWG). He has been nominated as the Co-Chair of the Sub-Committee on Taxation and also on the Sub-Committee on Banking & Finance of CII National Committee on Legal Services.
Aseem is a Visiting Faculty with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) on International Taxation & White-Collar Crimes and recently, was nominated as co-opted member of its International Affairs Committee. Aseem is an Executive Committee member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) Bar Association, New Delhi. He has been elected as Treasurer of Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF). He is nominated as Mentor of Indo American Chamber of Commerce (IACC) NIC’s Sub-Committee on Banking Financial Services & Insurance for the year 2025 and he has been its Former Regional President. He has been, in the past, the Co-Chairman of the Corporate Affairs Committee of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHD). He has been nominated, to the Cost Accounting Standards Board (CASB) of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India.
Aseem, in the past has been a member on the Board of Governors of a leading Business School, based in the National Capital Region. He, in an honorary capacity, acts as a Financial & Tax Advisor of a leading Pan India “Not for Profit” Organization, which has accomplished its Centenary Foundation Year (100th year of Establishment). Aseem’s name finds mention in “100 Legal Luminaries of India” published by Lexis Nexis. Aseem was featured in The Week magazine’s special coverage on Young Lawyers (a leading Indian current affairs publication) and has also been bestowed with the award of Young Achiever. He was earlier enlisted in the Law Business Research Publication, as one of the India’s 40 leading young lawyers under 45. Aseem has consistently been adjudged, over more than a decade now, as one of the leading legal experts in the Asia Pacific Region by various global analytics research and ranking firms.
Aseem has several authorships to his credit. His contribution has been acknowledged in the Kanga & Palkhivala’s Income Tax Commentary, 10th Edition. Aseem is the lead contributory author of the tax treatise, “A Global Analysis of Tax Treaty Disputes”, a seminal publication by Cambridge Tax Law Series. His authorship on the Indian contemporary tax landscape & fiscal policy developments titled, “Finding a Straight Line Between Twists and Turns: Imperfect, Yet Honest Reflections on the Indian Tax Landscape” has received global encouragement from the leading lawyers, & academicians. He has curated “Supreme Court on Company Law [Compendium of Cases] 1950-2021” Second Edition, in three volumes, published by Bloomsbury comprising landmark Supreme Court judgments of seven decades from 1950 till 2021, which is a pedagogical combination of insight and structured understanding of the subject. The Third Edition of the said Company Law Compendium of Cases, celebrating 75 years of Supreme Court Judgments, shall be shortly unveiled. The publications have received much praise from various academic, professional and esteemed judicial fora. His recent publication, “Play in the Joints: Tax Insights & the Play Continues”, an insight into Contemporary Tax Practice & Litigation Trends, was released in the august presence of leading legal luminaries.
Aseem has contributed to numerous academic & professional journals, including CCH Wolters Kluwer’s Publication on “A Compendium of Advance Rulings on Income Tax” and has contributed towards ICAI’s publication on “A Study on Drafting & Conveyance”. He is a contributory author of “Taxation of Crypto Assets”, a recent publication by Kluwer Law International. He has presented Paper for the International Fiscal Association IFA 2025 Lisbon Congress on subject “improper use of tax treaties and source taxation: policy, practice and beyond” and at the IFA 2013 Annual World Congress held in Copenhagen on the subject “Exchange of Information”. He is currently the co-author with the International Bureau for Fiscal Documentation’s (IBFD) Global Mergers & Acquisitions Tax Research Platform.
