In 2016, GTG Advocates established Afilexion Alliance, which provides expert consultancy, compliance and regulatory services to the gaming and betting industry and in 2018, GTG Advocates also established Caledo, which acts as a one-stop shop advisory solution for all services related to blockchain projects and cryptocurrencies.
GTG Advocates are considered as thought leaders in the fintech sector, especially in relation to blockchain and cryptocurrencies (and technology law generally).
The fintech department is mostly known for its work on the drafting of the Maltese legislation on cryptocurrencies and blockchain, having been instrumental in the drafting of the Virtual Financial Assets Act (Cap 590 of the Laws of Malta), the Malta Digital Innovation Authority Act (Cap 591 of the Laws of Malta) and the Innovative Technology Arrangements and Services Act (Cap 592 of the Laws of Malta), as well as the various Rulebooks, Guidelines and Subsidiary Legislation issued thereunder. The firm is in fact counsel on fintech to the Government of Malta as well as both fintech relevant authorities in Malta, namely, the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) and the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA). Other work for which the firm is known for includes its expertise on Cryptocurrency Services licensing, Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), Security Token Offerings (STOs), Fintech Services Licensing and other expert advisory services in the fintech sphere generally, especially on technology, intellectual property, gambling, e-commerce and data protection law.
The heads of the fintech team have been entrusted with educating the local fintech industry, with Dr Gauci (head of the fintech team) being appointed as the University lecturer for the upcoming Blockchain LLM at the University of Malta whilst Dr Terence Cassar and Dr Cherise Abela Grech (co-heads of the fintech team) were appointed as lecturers on Innovative Technology Arrangements and Services as part of the examination which must be successfully fulfilled to become licensed to advise in this sphere in Malta as a VFA Agent. Dr Ian Gauci, the firm’s Managing Partner, is also a member of the National Blockchain Taskforce and a founding member of the Blockchain Malta Association.
