Portugal is deemed to be the Silicon Valley of Europe. It has one of the fastest growing tech ecosystems and has become a desirable location for tech start-ups. The investments in the start-up scene have grown 30% since 2016. In 2022, the start-ups based in Portugal were worth EUR21 billion – up 26 times since 2016! Portugal has launched seven unicorns so far, and it is more than Italy, Spain and Greece combined.
There are a lot of government-backed initiatives and private sector efforts. In 2022, Vila Nova de Gaia has received EUR700 million investment to fund a tech hub, and the projects consists of a 21-hectare space to attract tech giants like Google, Facebook, IBM, Amazon and Netflix. International investors have contributed over 80% of the total investment raised by Lisbon-based start-ups. In 2022, the Lisbon City Council launched the “Unicorn Factory Lisboa”- a hub for start-ups and scale-ups. Web Summit is now held annually in Lisbon and the tech conference has over 70,000 participants and 2,600 companies attending. The northern city of Braga is also seeking to promote itself as a fintech hub, hosting events this year through StartSe on ESG, healthtech, HR, and lawtech.
