Lifetime Achievement Awards
Chambers UK Bar were pleased to recognise three lifetime achievement awardees during the 2022 ceremony.
Richard Drabble KC is one a small handful of practising public lawyers who may justifiably claim to have laid the foundations for modern constitutional and administrative law. Since his early days at the Bar he’s continuously been involved in important, headline grabbing public law cases and has particularly made his mark in the field of social security. HIs name will be found in the reports of almost all of the important social security law cases decided in the appellate courts in London, in the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights over the course of the past four decades. A founding member of Landmark Chambers, a former Chair of the Administrative Law Bar Association and as a member of the Bar Council’s Law Reform Committee, he’s a highly respected figure.
Sir Robert Francis KC has been a barrister for nearly fifty years, and a silk for thirty. A major figure in his field he has appeared as counsel for interested parties at a number of public inquiries, including the Bristol Royal Infirmary Inquiry, the Royal Liverpool Children’s Inquiry, and the Neale inquiry. He has also chaired the two Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust inquiries and the Freedom to Speak Up Review into the treatment of NHS staff who raise concerns. In 2021, he was appointed to undertake the infected blood compensation framework study.
Stephen Smith joined what is now Hailsham Chambers in 1975, becoming the Senior Clerk only seven years thereafter. He has remained in the same post ever since, becoming one of the most respected clerks in the country. Over the last 40 years he has overseen the development of Hailsham into a leading specialist clinical negligence set and along the way has nurtured the careers of many barristers, clerks and staff members.

CHAMBERS UK BAR SET OF THE YEAR
Winner: Monckton Chambers
Our winning set is known for its erudite barristers who excel in complicated areas of market regulation.
In what has been a bumper year, the barristers have led the development of the emergent class action regime within competition law in claims such as Le Patourel v BT, and the rail boundary fares claims.
They have also continued to act in leading cases before the EU courts including British Airways v Commission.
Outside the Competition law field the barristers have represented government departments in key challenges concerning the procurement of PPE contracts during the Covid pandemic, and in the Supreme Court case of Fratila.
