Chambers Canada Awards 2018

This year the Chambers Canada Guide Launch and Awards was held on Thursday, September 20th at The Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto.

The awards are based on the research for the 2019 edition of Chambers Canada: Canada's Leading Lawyers for Business. These awards reflect a law firm’s pre-eminence in key practice areas. They also reflect notable achievements over the past 12 months including outstanding work, impressive strategic growth and excellence in client service.

Lifetime Achievement Award

Ian Binnie C.C., Q.C.
Counsel at Lenczner Slaght Royce Smith Griffin LLP

Ian is widely regarded as one of the most prominent arbitrators and advocates in the country. Prior to joining Lenczner Slaght, he served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1998 to 2011, rendering judgments in over 170 landmark constitutional, criminal and administrative law cases.

Prior to joining McCarthy Tétrault in 1986, he served Canada as an Associate Deputy Minister of Justice, amongst other high-ranking public sector positions.

He has been described as "a brilliant mind, top of the list as both arbitrator and arbitration counsel," with sources sharing: “He is a star.”


Outstanding Contribution to the Legal Profession: In-House

Jeff Davis
Chief Legal & Corporate Affairs Officer at the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan Board

As well as overseeing the legal team, he is responsible for marketing & communications, compliance, government and public affairs, and plan policy.

Prior to joining Ontario Teachers', Jeff was a Corporate Associate at Torys, and held the position of Senior Vice-President, Corporate and Legal Affairs at InsLogic Corporation. He served two terms on the Ontario Securities Commission’s Securities Advisory Committee; he was an early member of the public policy committee of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance; and he is a member on the Executive Committee of the Legal Leaders for Diversity and Inclusion.

Jeff is known for his leadership style which is rooted in authenticity and vulnerability.

Janice Rubin
