Van Doorne dedicated arbitration team works from both Amsterdam and from our hub-office in London. The team is co-headed by Rogier Schellaars and Prof. Bas van Zelst. It comprises 11 advocates that are supported by two legal project managers with law degrees. The arbitration teams is embded in our firm’s 90+ lawyer dispute resolution team. The focus is on commercial and investment arbitration work, be it under the rules of the NAI or other (inter)national institutes (LCIA, ICC and UNCITRAL, among many others).


The team is bi-lingual English-Dutch and versed in both civil law and common law concepts and procedure. Rogier holds a full law degree from Queen Mary College and Leiden University. Bas obtained his PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2008. He was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School (2006/2007) and a visiting professor at the University of British Colombia (Canada, 2017).

Team members have notable expertise acting on the enforcement and setting aside of arbitral awards, as well as assisting clients with investment treaty and construction arbitrations. The practice also encompasses joint venture disputes, sanction-related mandates and insurance coverage disputes. The law firm is well equipped to represent corporates in arbitration proceedings against sovereign states. Alongside experience acting as arbitration counsel, the lawyers are also often appointed as arbitrators.
