Stewarts is a well-respected firm that focuses exclusively on litigation matters. Its growing private wealth disputes team is highly regarded, and an international adviser remarks that "it's always a very good experience working with the firm. The lawyers are very careful and empathetic."

The team is particularly well known for its track record in offshore and international cases, and a wealth expert notes: "They are doing some spectacular work."

Notable practitioners

Emma Holland is a senior associate in the trusts and probate litigation team and is recognised by a legal insider as "a rising star." "She's really hands-on and very responsive," says one commentator. Another reports: "She's highly recognised in this market. She's smart, bright and polite."

Geoffrey Kertesz joined Stewarts from BDB Pitmans in September 2020. Kertesz is considered to be an "absolutely smashing" practitioner. "He's an incredibly articulate bloke who is on top of what's happening in the contentious trusts space," says one interviewee, while another says he is "excellent - proactive, practical and he keeps me informed."

James Price leads the trust and probate litigation team. He focuses his practice on contentious private client matters and is particularly renowned for his work on offshore cases. "He's a fabulous litigator who is astute and sharp," remarks one interviewee. Another notes: "He's an excellent choice for offshore matters; he's bright, has real trusts expertise and always makes the client feel safe."

Overview

We advise on complex, large-scale and often high-profile disputes in the UK and other jurisdictions.

We act for high net worth individuals, families, family offices, trustees, trust companies and charities. The work we undertake includes both onshore and offshore trust litigation, domestic and international probate disputes, as well as work in the Court of Protection.

The practice has earned an outstanding reputation and is led by Band 1 ranked James Price. The arrival of Geoff Kertesz adds further strength and depth to the team.

In addition to conducting litigation in the UK, our lawyers coordinate claims in overseas jurisdictions, when necessary working alongside specialist law firms and non-legal professionals around the world. We also have a range of language skills including French, Italian, Spanish, Mandarin, Polish, and Russian.

We have unrivalled experience in putting together innovative costs arrangements. The use of third party funding, after-the-event insurance and risk-sharing fee agreements enables our clients to manage risk and litigate from a position of financial strength.

The department collaborates frequently with the firm’s highly experienced Divorce and Family, Tax Litigation, Commercial Litigation and Arbitration departments.
